Цихліди роду Paratilapia (Bleeker, 1868) зустрічаються на Мадагаскарі.
Філогенетичний аналіз ДНК і морфологічних данних досі не всіх задовільняють.
Наприклад, послідовність даних з мтДНК 16S рРНК і COI не узгоджуються з їх розміщенням (Спаркс 2004), і стандартна гіпотеза серед цихлід — що це викликано гібридизаційними ефектами — очевидно, не може бути застосована тут, так як гени мітохондрій також постраждали від гібридної інтрогрессіі.
У будь-якому випадку Paratilapia, як правило, займають позицію між африканськими підродинами, такими, як Ptychochrominae та індо-малагазійськими Etroplinae і Ptychochrominae в більшості аналізів, і це цілком може бути правильним.
Якщо це так, то їх предки повинні бути відокремлені від всіх інших живих цихлід Мезозойського періоду.
Вони швидше за все вже були окремою лінією з Туроніанського періоду (90 млн років назад), як індо-малагазійські групи повинні були виникнути до відколу Мадагаскару від Індійського Материка, що розпочався тоді й був закінчений до кінця Крейдяного періоду. (Спаркс 2004)
Отже, вони повинні бути класифіковані як підродина Paratilapiinae.
